Atul Kochhar is a chef, restaurateur, and television personality who was born in India and now lives in the United Kingdom. His singular talent has altered people’s perceptions of and experiences with Indian cuisine. His modern style and passion for traditional cooking led him to open his own restaurant, Benares, in 2007, which earned him a second Michelin star. Since then, he’s launched a slew of award-winning restaurants, including Sindhu and Hawkyns in Buckinghamshire, and Indian Essence in Kent.

Atul departed Benares in 2018 to explore other independent initiatives, the most recent of which being Kanishka in Mayfair, London, which opened in March 2019 and has since been followed by another new London location. Saturday Kitchen, Masterchef Goes Large, Great British Menu, BBC2’s Million Pound Menu, and Saturday Morning with James Martin are among Kochhar’s many television appearances.

  2. Kochhar moved to the five-star Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi in June 1993.
  3. He worked as a sous chef at one of the hotel’s five restaurants, leading an 18-person staff and quickly lifting the bar in the kitchen. Kochhar moved to famous chef Bernard Kunig’s fine dining restaurant in January 1994. 
  4. Kochhar maintained his culinary career, becoming the first Indian chef to be granted a Michelin star in January 2001, at the age of 31.
