He got his first aspiration in music by hearing Grand Ole Opry on the radio. He joined his first band which was named “Kitty Dibble and Her Dude Ranch Wranglers” at the age of 15. By 17, Smith was ready to play bass strings and worked for WORL-AM, which is a radio station in Tennessee. He later served in the navy for three years and played for other country singers like Molly O’Day and Skeets Williamson. He also worked with Grand Ole Opry later and his first hit was “Let’s Live A Little.”
